Identity Theft – The Invisible Criminal

January 5th, 2009

Over 27 million people in the last five years have become victims of identity theft. This has become a billion dollar business for criminals. The worst part is, you might not even know you’re a victim while it’s happening. When a criminal decides on their victim, they can ruin a person life for years to come. 85% of victims find out after the damage has been done, the other 15% find out through a paid service. The average number of hours logged in trying to repair the damage is usually worse than the money taken – averaging up to 600 hours. Take your hourly wage and multiply it by 600 then add the 5 grand that most thieves get away with. That is the actual amount taken.

Here are a couple safety tips to help protect you against Identity Theft: Pay bills online with a secure account to reduce paper trails. Thieves can easily obtain your information either by stealing mail or going through your trash. Also, immediately report lost or stolen wallets/purses and cancel all credit cards. Never give personal information to anyone calling you over the phone who you don’t know. Take a proactive approach and use a paid service to protect you from identity theft. Don’t respond to unknown email messages to ensure you don’t fall victim to a phishing scam.

Protect your identity like you would protect your home. People don’t see identity theft as a problem because people can’t see identity theft. But securing your good name could be as easy as setting a home alarm system if you take the right precautions.

Holiday Crime Preventions and Precautions

December 22nd, 2008

The holiday season is the time for giving, sharing, caring and crime. Yes, unfortunately there are still bad guys out there who are less concerned about giving and more interested in taking this time of year. Here are a few areas to pay extra close attention to this holiday season to make sure make sure your holidays are merry, cheerful and bright but most importantly safe.

ATM Safety ATMs receive an exceptional amount of traffic during the holidays. Make sure you’re fully equipped with holiday street smarts before you pull your card out in public this year. First, take off the gloves. Gloves can make it hard to grab just one card. You may end up yanking out more than one and risk dropping cards on the ground or in the snow, possibly even without realizing it. Second, block the view of your pin number from the people behind you. You never know who is watching and might swipe your purse or wallet then try to swipe your card. Be sure to grab your receipt and card when you’re finished. You don’t want to tempt criminals by announcing how much money you have in your account. Third, take a second to put everything away while you’re still at the machine, even if you feel rushed. You don’t want to be flashing your money around or drop anything trying to put it away in a busy mall. If you have to use outdoor machines, make sure you use one in a well lit area. Avoid going at night if possible.

Walking To Your Car Distractions are plentiful this time of year so safety might not be on the top of your to do list. One thing to remember though is to always know your surroundings. Never take help from strangers if you are perfectly capable of carrying things yourself. If you need help ask one of the store workers before leaving the store. You never want to lead a stranger to your car even if their intent is truly harmless. When parking, try not to park next to vans or suspicious vehicles, especially on the side of a sliding door. Try to park in a well lit area at night. Have get your keys ready before you leave the store. You don’t want to take time fumbling around for them in front of your car and if necessary your can use them as a weapon.

Pick Pocket Protection Criminals watch where you put your money. Then they strike victims who are the easiest targets. Don’t be an easy target. Guys, keep your wallets in your front pocket. You can easily drop your wallet trying to put it in your back pocket and not even realize it. And back pockets and inside coat pockets are the main target areas for pick pockets. What may seem as a harmless bump into a stranger could actually be you being robbed of your identity and money. Women, hold your purses tight to your body when walking around. Never walk with your purse dangling and especially don’t keep it open. When pushing a shopping cart, take your purse with you if you leave your cart abandoned while grabbing something from another aisle.

Secure Your Castle What better place for criminals to do their holiday shopping than the place where you keep all your newly purchased and received goodies. Don’t let a burglar ruin your holiday and months to follow by making you their next victim. As if the mental image of burglars rummaging through your home while your away isn’t bad enough, chances are they’ve taken a good amount of valuables with them as well. So what should you do to keep your homestead off the criminal shopping list? First of all criminals don’t like to rob houses when people are home. It just never works out well. So what you should do is always make it look like you’re home even when you’re not. This can be done by leaving a light on and a car in the driveway. Another tactic to practice is not advertising what you do have when you are home. For instance, if you have nice things in your garage, keep the garage door closed and curtains shut whenever possible. Keep valuables out of site from your house windows as well. Criminals like to take advantage of vulnerable homes, often time passing up homes with gates, dogs and security signs for homes that look more inviting. And obviously don’t forget to set your home security system when going over to a friend or families’ house for the night. The holidays are also a good time to replace your backup batteries on your system because of winter storms taking down power lines. Criminals know people are most vulnerable during power outages.

The best way to not to become a victim is to be two steps ahead of the bad guys. Even during stressful hectic holiday madness, take the time to assess your situations and go about your duties safely and smartly. Don’t let Grinch loving criminals get the best of you this holiday season. And be sure to send this page to all your loved ones to make sure the only one creeping down their chimney this holiday is good old St. Nick.

Holiday Safety Tips at Home

December 16th, 2008

The days leading up to your celebrated holiday can be a little hectic and often times stressful. With so much to do around the house this holiday season, be sure to take that extra bit of precaution to ensure your celebrations go off without a hitch.

Here are some tips to remember to keep you and your family safe for the holidays:

1) Make sure to clean up the party before going to bed. You don’t want small children getting into spoiled food, alcohol or swallow anything they can choke on the next day.
2) Be sure to keep a closed screen in front of the fireplace, especially when using real firewood and even more so when going to bed for the night.
3) Try to keep kids in a designated play area and out of high traffic areas – especially cooking areas.
4) Keep paper wrappings, brittle trees, lights and presents away from fireplaces.
5) Lay down strips of carpet in high traffic areas where floors might become slick.
6) Make sure all appliances are turned off after dinner is prepared.
7) Clear all tables in the house of anything dangerous within a child’s reach.
8] Keep your raw meats away from any raw vegetables and serving platters.
9) When visiting relatives, leave a light on at home and be sure to set your home security system.
10) Make sure all guests are able to drive themselves home at the end of the evening. If not, call a cab or prepare a spare room.

Remember these safety tips to help bring in the New Year accident free. Even with an endless to-do list and the non-stop commotion, try to take a deep breath and take it one task at a time.

Wireless vs. Wired Home Security Systems?

December 12th, 2008

Most people sometime in their life will have to make a decision regarding a Home Security System. Maybe you already did or maybe you won’t have to for another 20 years, but most likely someday you’ll be asked the question, “would you like to go with the wireless or wired home security?”. So it might be a good thing to know some of the facts before you get put on the spot.

Positives of a wireless alarm system: Well the key reason many people go with the wireless system, I found to be, was that it’s cheaper and faster. Instead of having some guy come in and tear their house apart they opted with the clean route. And in this case cheaper doesn’t necessarily mean less efficient. It’s cheaper because you don’t have to pay for all the wiring and labor, as you would with a wired system. Another positive is the range of the wireless system. Once again, since you don’t have to run cables all over the place, your system can easily be placed throughout your property – which matters most with people with a lot of area to cover. And take into factor that wireless systems don’t rely on your homes power grid. This way you’re not left in the dark if something happens to your power. True, most wired systems have battery backup, but if you don’t check your back often, you could be at risk.

Positives of a wired alarm system: Big proponents of the wired systems rave about their reliability. The reason they are considered more reliable is because they don’t have to rely on batteries 24/7. So pretty much like stated above, it comes down to how responsible you’re going to be with replacing batteries. You’ll find yourself buying and replacing batteries with the wireless system a lot more often than you would with a wired system. If you go with a wired system, be sure to set yourself a reminder to change your backup batteries when they go bad and you should be in good shape.

That’s pretty much the major differences between the two. So whether you are looking to save money, time or whether you’re looking for a low maintenance system – that will all boil down to your personal preference. Here’s one final tip if you’re currently in the market for a Home Security System, the big companies like ADT and Brinks have 24/7 monitoring with a live person at all times. You may not get that with a local company so be sure to ask. Here’s a good link for getting a great system practically for free - AlarmNation. Or if you need to talk over your situation with a live person call 800.450.0941. Good luck with what ever decision you come to – you are now prepared for questioning.

Is a home security surveillance system going too far?

December 10th, 2008

Some people can argue that video cameras positioned throughout your home and yard is being a bit extreme with security precautions. Maybe even being a bit over protective of your home and family. After all, it’s not going to be able to stop anyone if a thief does decide to break in, right?

Well studies have shown that the presence of a home security camera alone is the number 1 deterrent of criminal activity. So, one can argue that they instantly become safer just by putting the cameras up in plain view of the public - Which might very well be true. Criminals interviewed about past break-ins admitted they’d look for the easiest house on the block to rob. Places with gates, alarm signs, and dogs were passed up for houses with open windows and unlocked doors. Makes sense.

So when it comes time to secure your home, how far should you go to make sure you’re not the house on the block that doesn’t get passed by? Probably depends on your situation. If you leave town a lot or perhaps have a newborn child then maybe you should take extra precautions in securing your home. But if you’re a single guy coming home to your Rottweiler every night, maybe the eye in the sky would just be a big waste of money.

But then again, it’s better to be safe than sorry. And there are a lot of dumb criminals out there that often times act before they think, so you can’t always trust the statistics. For any of you protective people looking to feel a bit more secure I took the liberty of finding a site where you can get an ADT Home Security System for free – AlramNation – it’s a pretty good first step to a secure and safe life.
